Most leaks are small. Finding them isn’t.
Water enters at one point and shows up six rafters away. We practice leak forensics — trace, verify, fix — so you pay to solve the problem, not to chase the stain.
Leak forensics
Trace. Verify. Fix.
Trace
Moisture meter on the interior stain, then up into the attic to follow the watermark uphill to its true entry point.
Attic + drone surveyVerify
Controlled hose test to reproduce the leak before we touch a shingle. If we can’t make it leak, we don’t guess — we keep looking.
Photo-documentedFix
Repair at the entry point with matched materials — then a second hose test to prove it’s done. Tar is a confession, not a repair.
5-yr written warrantyCommon culprits
Nine times out of ten, it’s one of these.
- Chimney & wall flashing. The #1 leak source in New England — rebuilt in copper, not caulked into next year’s callback.
- Pipe boots. A $40 part with a 10-year life on a 30-year roof. We replace all of them while we’re up there.
- Valleys. Where two slopes argue, water wins. Re-woven or re-lined with ice barrier and metal.
- Slipped & cracked slates. Individually swapped with reclaimed stock that matches your roof’s age and quarry.
- Ridge caps & vents. First thing the wind takes; quickest thing we put back — properly fastened this time.
- Skylight perimeters. Usually the flashing kit, not the glass. We reflash first and say so.
The honest math
Repair or replace?
| Repair it | Roof under ~15 years old, damage is localized, deck is dry — a repair buys real years at a fair price. |
|---|---|
| Plan ahead | Widespread granule loss, curling tabs, or repairs creeping up annually — repair today, but budget the replacement for a season you choose. |
| Replace it | Three or more leaks in two years, daylight in the attic, or repair quotes above 20% of replacement — the math has flipped, and we’ll show you the numbers. |
We sell roughly four repairs for every replacement. That ratio is the business model: fix what’s fixable, earn the replacement when it’s real, and be the only call you make for thirty years.
Quick answers
Repair questions.
We keep reclaimed slate sorted by quarry and color, and we stock discontinued shingle lines bought at closeouts for exactly this reason. A repair should disappear into the roof — if a perfect match isn’t possible, we’ll place new material on the least visible slope and tell you up front.
Yes — that pattern almost always means flashing or siding-to-roof intersections, and it’s doing quiet damage to sheathing between storms. These are usually our least expensive, most satisfying fixes.
Most of our repair work is on other people’s installs. We’ll never bad-mouth the original crew — we’ll just show you the photos, explain what water is doing, and fix it with our own 5-year warranty on the work.
